Buffalo Ghee

Bhains ka Ghee

Ghee made from the milk of our buffaloes alone. It is the richer, heavier of our two ghees - the one many kitchens here reach for when making halwa, laddoo or anything for a festival, and the one that gives dal-baati its weight. It is made and jarred separately from the cow ghee, so what is on the label is what is in the jar.

How we make it

Made on the farm from our own buffaloes' milk, in small batches, and filled into glass jars. We are not going to dress this up with a method name we cannot stand behind - if you want to know exactly how it is made, ask us, or come and look.

Keeping it

A cool, dry shelf is enough - ghee does not need a fridge. Buffalo ghee sets firmer than cow ghee in the cold months; that is normal. Use a dry spoon every time.

You are welcome to come and see the farm it comes from, and the common questions page covers what most people ask before their first order.

Questions about our buffalo ghee

Is buffalo ghee or cow ghee better for sweets?
Most kitchens here use buffalo ghee for halwa, laddoo and festival sweets, because it is richer and heavier. Cow ghee is the lighter everyday one. Both are made only from our own animals' milk.
Why has my buffalo ghee gone solid?
Buffalo ghee sets firmer than cow ghee, especially in winter. Stand the jar in warm water for a few minutes, or just scoop it - nothing is wrong with it.
Does ghee need to be refrigerated?
No. A cool, dry shelf is enough. Use a dry spoon every time; water is the one thing that will spoil it.
